Spotlight on Arts – Celebrating Creative Journeys at DocPhoto 8

This week, Spotlight on Arts went on the road to capture the atmosphere and conversations from the open viewing of DocPhoto 8, held at the Basement Gallery of Leicester Adult Education College. Hosted by John Coster with Rob Watson, this episode offers a vibrant snapshot of the people and perspectives behind the latest exhibition, showcasing how photography continues to evolve as a vital means of expression, storytelling and connection.

We spoke with a range of contributors—from first-time exhibitors to experienced photographers—each bringing their own voice, style, and motivations to the gallery walls. Whether capturing intimate portraits, experimenting with AI imagery, exploring social themes, or drawing inspiration from community heritage, each artist reflected on what photography means to them and how their practice has developed over time.

Some, like Jade, used photography to push personal boundaries and document underrepresented subjects, while others, like Tony, drew from decades of street photography experience, shaped by life events and personal resilience. We also heard from collaborative artists like Marta and Cassia, who brought together black-and-white portraiture and hand-painted colour in a touching tribute to women’s strength and solidarity.
